Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
Personal Development, Health, and Physical Education
Stage 4 and 5 PDHPE develops the knowledge, understanding, and skills students need to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing, and participation in physical activity. The course is broken into 3 strands:
- Health, wellbeing, and relationships
- Movement skill and performance
- Healthy, safe, and active lifestyles
Throughout these strands, students will explore personal identity, develop strategies to manage change, challenges, power, abuse, violence, and learn how to protect themselves and others in a range of situations. Students will actively participate and develop skills in a variety of movement contexts across a range of individual and team-based activities. They will engage with a range of health issues and identify strategies to keep them healthy, safe, and active.
Stage 6 PDHPE examines a range of areas that underpin health and physical activity. This includes how people think about health and physical activity, the management of personal health, and the basis for how the body moves. Students focus on major issues related to Australia’s health status, investigate the health of young people or of groups experiencing health inequities, and also look at factors that affect physical performance. They undertake optional study from a range of choices including first aid, outdoor recreation, sports medicine, improving performance, and the health of young people. Students throughout this course have opportunities to undertake outdoor recreational activities and gain qualifications through the obtaining of first aid certificates.

The PDHPE Faculty covers the areas of Personal Development, Physical Education, Sports Programs, and Dance Programs. All students study PDHPE in stages 4 and 5 and the PE faculty offers the following elective courses in stage 5 and stage 6.
