Human society and its environment

In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects in Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 to 5).

A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:

  • research, gather and analyse information
  • question and make judgements
  • write for a variety of purposes. 

In Year 11 and 12, students can choose from a range of HSIE courses. These include:

  • Aboriginal Studies
  • Ancient History
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • History Extension
  • Legal Studies
  • Modern History
  • Society and Culture
  • Studies of Religion.

History is committed to the provision of quality teaching and interactive learning experiences which will enable students to become life long learners and critical thinkers with a developed historical consciousness.  Catering for learners of the future we understand that the dynamics of educational change is cyclical and contextual and that our programs and curriculum delivery requires continuous innovation, evaluation and relevance to the modern world.

Faculty focus areas 

  • Continuous development and refinement of teaching and learning programs embedding literacy and numeracy strategy as part of regular and focused learning.
  • Exploring ways to embed technology into teaching and learning programs to enhance student engagement and learning.
  • Develop ways to embed on-line learning in Stage 4 using Chromebooks.
  • Revise and refine assessment practice as evidence of learning through a range of meaningful and realistic assessment methods that focus on assessment for, assessment as and assessment of learning.
  • Experiment with a variety of student based activities to increase student engagement.

Our strategies

  • Cross faculty learning teams to explore ways of innovating learning to engage students purposefully in the study of history and languages.
  • Collaborative planning and workshop activities to address student engagement. 
  • Collaborative sharing of program and teaching approaches building a collaborative and shared approach across the faculty.
  • Using SMART information to embed areas of literacy and numeracy into the teaching and learning programs, where students need more focused development in the context of history and languages.

About the Social Sciences Faculty at Liverpool Girls High School

The Social Sciences Faculty is committed to opening the minds of its students to the world around them. The faculty offers courses across the school curriculum at Liverpool Girls' High School, introducing students to arts, humanities, civics and citizenship as well as social education. We believe our students will be the leaders of the future. This will be both challenging and exciting. Opportunities exist for all students to achieve their potential through a range of subjects and activities. Our subjects and courses are designed to encourage students to think about the world in new and different ways and enable them to develop and appreciation of the physical, social and cultural aspects of society.

Students undertaking courses in Social Sciences are provided with a range of opportunities to experience course content in the real world. Students are able to participate in field work activities, school excursions, academic competitions such as Mock Trial, world skills and the Australian geography competition.

  • Implementation of the new NESA syllabus in geography incorporating the National Curriculum.
  • Create engaging learning environments for all types of learners.
  • Provide industry standard learning spaces for VET Retail Services and VET Business Services.
