About the Faculty
At Liverpool Girls High School, Science empowers students to explore and understand the world with curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Our programs build strong foundations across biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and environmental science, while developing essential Working Scientifically skills that encourage investigation, problem solving, and collaboration. Students engage in hands-on experiments, project-based learning, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, gaining practical skills and scientific literacy that prepare them for further study and active citizenship.
Stage 4 and Stage 5
In Stages 4 and 5, students move from learning basic scientific ideas to applying their knowledge in more complex and independent ways. They investigate key concepts across all areas of science, developing confidence in practical work, theoretical understanding, and critical thinking. As they progress, students are encouraged to make connections between science and everyday life, engage with contemporary issues, and build the skills needed for success in senior study.
Stage 6
Biology
Students explore living systems at every scale, from the molecular level of cells and DNA to ecosystems as a whole. They investigate genetics, evolution, disease, and biotechnology, linking biological knowledge to health, the environment, and global challenges.
Chemistry
Students examine the properties and interactions of matter, investigating energy, reactions, and the development of new materials. Chemistry highlights the role of science in medicine, industry, and sustainability, with a strong focus on practical investigations and problem solving.
Investigating Science
Students study the nature and practice of science itself; that is, how questions are developed, investigations designed, and evidence evaluated. The course emphasises critical thinking, research, and communication skills, helping students analyse the impact of science on society and apply their learning to real-world issues.
Extracurricular and high potential and gifted learner opportunities
Science at Liverpool Girls High School offers students a variety of rich and engaging learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. From integrated learning programs in Year 7 to collaborative, project-based learning in Year 8 and depth studies in the senior years, students are encouraged to think critically, work creatively, and apply their knowledge to real-world issues. Learning is supported by practical experiments, digital technologies, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives, helping students see the relevance of science in their lives. Students are also offered opportunities that extend and challenge their learning, further encouraging curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
