Community and Family Studies

Community and Family Studies

The Community and Family Studies (CAFS) course is an ATAR subject that is designed for students to develop an understanding of the diverse nature and interdependence of families and communities. The course enables students to plan and manage resources effectively, in order to address contemporary issues facing families and communities. Community and Family Studies provides opportunities for students to explore and form positive attitudes about themselves and others; to develop an understanding of different relationships and diverse groups; to learn to work co-operatively and to appreciate the importance of effective communication.

Students are required to develop and utilise research skills in planning, collecting, recording, interpreting, analysing, and presenting as they employ various research methodologies to complete an Independent Research Project (IRP). Community and Family Studies explores life issues that are important and relevant to all young people. The unique topics investigated and emphasis on research ensures a course that is attractive to many students, with the capacity to challenge and extend all students' ability levels.
